Congratulations to Senator Dianne Feinstein. She actually spoke about gun control and mentioned something other than guns.
She mentioned guns too, of course. But she also mentioned firearms accessories that provide a specific FUNCTIONAL capability. It's not named in this article but it may be a "bump fire" mechanism. I've seen her mention that one before. Let's talk about these accessories, Dianne. Let's sit down and have a rational, "reasonable" and "common sense" discussion about them. We can do that right after you drop ALL your other ridiculous gun control proposals and stop LYING to people to try and advance your 20+ year agenda. (This sounds sarcastic but I'm actually serious. I could reasonably consider a ban on these devices. But FIRST the gun control crowd has to act in good faith, which they're FAR from doing.)
But the really big news is that she also mentioned the entertainment and video game industries that glorify guns and gave them a low key warning that Congress may feel compelled to step in if they don't take voluntary steps of their own. Can you say "freedom of speech" and "1st Amendment", Dianne?
Personally, I'm not concerned too much about violence in movies. I'm more bothered by the cut-em-up horror flicks than about gun violence. I do have reservations about health and safety related to gun violence in video games, specifically "first person shooter" games. By their nature, these games are VERY immersive - people play them for many hours and have a degree of control vs. passively viewing a movie for shorter periods of time, usually just once, and have no control over. They've also been shown to have an effect on players' emotional states. And they do seem to closely parallel professional simulators used in law enforcement and military training - conditioning people to accept, respond to and create violence and chaos. But I also understand we have a 1st Amendment in this country. I really don't like people burning our flag. That's very personal to me. But I acknowledge their right to do so. I really don't like reading about immigrated American muslims saying it's their duty to convert all Americans to muslimism in a country that guarantees religious freedom and has a constitution stating such that they swore an oath to in order to gain citizenship. Frankly, I think those who have said so or are members of groups who sponsor such thinking and intent should be deported for failing to uphold their oaths. And I really don't like it when our politicians who have sworn to uphold our constitution seem hell bent on destroying the parts of it they don't agree with. But they're all protected by the same document and principles that they act in defiance of.
Go ahead, Dianne, go after the 1st Amendment. Leave the informed gun rights advocates in charge of the 2nd Amendment. Let us know how it turns out for you. I'd ask that you spend the next 20 years of your life tilting at that windmill but I'm REALLY, REALLY hoping you won't be in the public eye beyond your current term. It's TRAGIC you've been recently reelected. Let this be your last term! (We NEED term limits in Congress!)
This article starts out with Feinstein blaming the NRA for her failing efforts. No, Dianne, it's not just the NRA. It's you! Just because you think everyone is out to get you doesn't mean it's not true. Sometimes there's good reason for it to be so. You're a prime example.
