Obama Acts to Strengthen NICS AFTER Gun Control Fails

April 19, 2013

If this has always been about keeping people safe and reducing gun violence then why didn't President Obama take these steps to get names of the mentally ill and dangerous into the NICS background check system beginning the day after he signed his 23 executive orders in January instead of immediately after gun control legislation failed in the Senate more than 3 months later? Were their priorities really about reducing gun violence or were they about pursuing their decades-old agenda to control firearms and their owners?

"The Obama administration was starting a process Friday aimed at removing barriers in health privacy laws that prevent some states from reporting information to the background check system. The action comes two days after the Senate rejected a measure that would have required buyers of firearms online and at gun shows to pass a background check. That's already required for shoppers at licensed gun dealers."

If he and other gun control advocates had done this first and attacked it with the vigor that they've attacked guns and gun owners they might have had a different result when it was finally time to debate background checks. Others and I have been saying for months that NICS needs to be fixed before it should be expanded.
