We now know that the Manchin-Toomey amendment, S.Amdt.715, to expand background checks has failed. But I have to give credit to the brilliant political move mentioned in this article. Attempting to bundle any expansion of background checks with other elements more desirable to gun owners was a temptation. The elements here were concealed carry license reciprocity across states and allowing gun sales across state lines. For those familiar with the MANY different laws regarding carrying and transporting firearms across state lines, federal reciprocity would have been a godsend. It really is a mess! Gun sales across state lines would also be welcomed but probably isn't as burdensome. My first reaction to this article was to wonder if this might tip the vote in favor of passing Manchin-Toomey. After a little consideration I was betting it wouldn't be enough. Those who are carrying firearms, open or concealed, are already aware of the complex world they live in. But simplifying it, as rightful and welcome as that might be, probably isn't worth giving in on other fundamental beliefs about gun control and the intentions of the people pushing it.
