Firearms Inheritance

June 11, 2013

Firearms owners with concerns about how to legally pass down their lawfully owned firearms to others instead of having them confiscated by the government may find this article useful and informative, especially if they have collections, historical relics, restricted firearms or accessories, or items with sentimental value.

Legislation has been proposed in several states in 2013 that would force the confiscation of certain types of firearms upon the present owner's death. I don't know the status of whether that's law in any states today but it seems likely in places like California, New York and elsewhere where they have very restrictive laws in place for so-called "assault weapons".

Due to the costs mentioned here, it may not be something the average gun owner can or will do. It's also worth noting that there is some gun control activity that could affect these "gun trusts" in the future.
