Despite the Arkansas legislature allowing lawful concealed carry of firearms on college campuses, it allows for those colleges to ban the practice.
The University of Arkansas and Arkansas State University have chosen to do that, making their students more potential victims of being in a so-called "gun free zone" which is code for "soft target" or "target rich environment".
University of Arkansas students and faculty alike have opposed the decision, citing recent violent crime that's occurred immediately off campus where people walk daily to and from the campus.
What's the advice from the college?
"Sharon Houlette, a detective with the UALR Department of Public Safety, responded to the thread with advice for avoiding being attacked, which included a suggestion to “glance or nod” at possible attackers.
“A glance or a nod will help you show anyone who might think that you are not paying attention, and you are aware of their presence,” she wrote."
That makes sense because we all know that a "glance or nod", "paying attention" and awareness of their presence prevents criminals from performing criminal activity, except when it doesn't, like in all the places where it's caught ON CAMERA. And we also know from experience that potential rapists and murderers are particularly careful to not be noticed by their victims - the ones they look in the face as they perform their acts and the ones the intend to kill who won't be around to identify them.Yes, being aware of your surroundings is always good advice whether you're armed or not. It does help to keep you safer. But to say 'be aware' while restricting people from protecting themselves with a real defensive tool is almost criminal.
Is this "glance or nod" advice as insulting as Colorado's advice to college women to urinate on themselves to avoid rape? You decide.
