Washington DC Attempts to Require Firearm Owner Insurance

June 3, 2013

Washington DC is at it again - trying to find and implement new and creative ways to prevent law abiding firearms owners from exercising their 2nd Amendment rights. Actually, this latest attack is neither new nor creative. It's been attempted several times in many other locations. So far all have been unsuccessful, I believe.

The issue is mandatory gun owner insurance. Democratic DC Council member Mary Cheh wants to require $250k in insurance before anyone can legally own a gun and require that current gun owners obtain the insurance within 30 days of passage. She wants the insurance to cover both acts of negligence and willful, unlawful acts. What are the problems with this?

1) Insurance companies won't insure against willful acts. Since the insurance doesn't exist, it's effectively an all-out gun ban.
2) It's another attempt to make the cost of owning a gun too expensive for some to exercise.
3) No other constitutional right requires fees, taxes or insurance to exercise.
4) When this was proposed in another area, I believe it was Illinois, it was estimated that $100k of insurance could cost as much as $2k or more annually. I don't know how that estimated price was arrived at, however, so don't know if it's valid.
5) Acts of negligence and accidents are already covered by some home owner's insurance policies.
