Here's an interactive map showing raw data of events where firearms were used in self defense. The webpage says it's not comprehensive because there are events that go unreported. In spot checking 3 incidents that were reported this year, 2 were present and 1 was missing, so it's not complete either. This seems to to contradict the (moronic) statements of California Police Chief Ken James, “One issue that always boggles my mind is that the idea that a gun is a defensive weapon." "That is a myth. It seems the federal Dept of Homeland Security (DHS) disagrees with the Chief too. Read past the inflammatory nature of this article and you'll find it reports DHS is purchasing 7000 "commercial items" (assault weapons) that are also referred to as "personal defense weapons (PDW)". This has been reported on several other websites. I have not seen the DHS source document. And this Michigan prosecutor might disagree with the Chief too - "The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office will not charge the basketball coach with any crime. Through the accounts I follow on Twitter, I get multiple reports every week of incidents in which firearms are used defensively. Very few of them come from CNN or CBS. (I don't follow ABC, NBC, MSNBC or any newspapers via Twitter.)
