What will be the impact on the 2014 mid-term elections of the recent gun control push, the legislative proposals and the failed passage in the US Senate? Take your pick. Regardless of what outcome you want to see, you can find someone already predicting it. History showed us that the gun control push in the 1990s cost Democrats dearly in the following election. Many see the same thing happening in 2014. Some see just the opposite and cite in increasing disapproval of those who voted against gun control legislation, most notably the background check proposal. As a nation, we’re all over the map on these issues – even the background check one. There have been several polls showing up to 90% support for increased background checks. But there’s no poll that shows how many of those 90% actually know what it is they’re supporting. That would be an interesting poll! My guess is that most people could only regurgitate the sound bites and talking points of the gun control supporters. Some would admit they don’t know but would support it anyway. A minority would be able to point out the flaws in the proposals, some of which would sound like gun rights talking points and sound bites. I guess only time will tell how 2014 will be affected. Until then, take your pick from the following, or others of your choice.
2014 may be the next “frontier” of the gun control battle, but it’s not the next battle as we’ve already heard from several politicians to expect gun control back on the Senate floor this year. “Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., a victim of mass gun violence, sent out an email shaming Congress for having done "nothing" in the face of mass violence; and in a defiant and emotional speech, President Obama lambasted Congress for having "caved to the pressure" from the gun lobby at the expense of protecting "the lives of all our children." ” No, Ms. Giffords, Congress didn’t do “nothing”. They had the vote that you and other outspoken gun control advocates said that families of Newtown were entitled too. I’m not sorry to say that the vote didn’t go your way. Enough people realized that the legislation had nothing to do with Newtown, despite the emotional pleas by you and others. And, Mr. President, the gun lobby didn’t send in those MILLIONS of letters, emails, faxes and phone calls to our national and state politicians. Those were sent by millions of 2nd Amendment supporting American citizens. We’re trying to save lives too and we’re looking at the bigger picture – far beyond “one life”, as you should be as leader of a nation. “ "This was a pretty shameful day for Washington," the president said Wednesday, flanked by the families of Newtown victims and Giffords” About this one you’re right, Mr. President. What happened this day and preceding days in Washington was shameful. There are many other words that could describe it but we’ll go with shameful for now. It’s shameful that you and other gun control advocating politicians have dragged the Newtown families from state to state, city to city, session to session, stage to stage, camera to camera to use emotional pleas to support your misguided agenda and ideology, have fed them talking points that are inaccurate and misleading and have ignored the voices of tens of millions more Americans who can see through the charade. Mayor Bloomberg, really, your rants are getting boring. We all know by now that you’ve self-appointed yourself as the personal savior for every American. Guess what. We don’t want that. To Rep. Giffords, Capt Mark Kelly, and Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG, a front company for Bloomberg), in order to enact “common sense” gun laws you’d all have to back completely away from your platforms because we all know you’re not coming to the table with common sense in hand. MAIG, you’ve already demonstrated “We'll do whatever it takes” through the various lies you’ve told to the public. Apparently truthfulness, logic and integrity are not among your “whatever”. Oh, and for those of you who keep crying that these senators did not follow the will of their constituents – perhaps that’s because they’re aware of their oath to support the United States Constitution and understand “shall not be infringed”. A simple majority of (uninformed or misled) opinion does not trump the constitutional rights of the others! That 90% you keep talking about still isn’t enough to repeal the 2nd Amendment – and you know it.

And how about these next 3 paragraphs?
“The president has done more than spur gun sales. As he ramped up his effort last December, precincts across the country reported a record number of applications for concealed-carry permits; shelves emptied of ammunition; AR-15s, a favored bogeyman of the gun-illiterate Left, became almost impossible to obtain; the National Rifle Association added half a million members in six weeks; and, most important, the states took up the cause. Much hay has been made of the reactionary new laws in Connecticut, Colorado, New York, and Maryland. New York’s in particular has been singled out as a perfect example of the follies of haste. But what of the 15 states that have loosened their rules?
This year, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Virginia, South Dakota, Kentucky, Texas, Idaho, Montana, Utah, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Michigan, Maine, and Arizona have all enacted bills that weaken gun restrictions. Arkansas, North Dakota, Tennessee, and Maine have expanded the list of places where citizens may keep and carry weapons; Virginia, Montana, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Maine have made concealed-carry permit records confidential or limited public access to them; and the legislatures in Oklahoma and Kansas have sent bills to the governor that would provide “automatic reciprocity for all out-of-state concealed weapon permits.”
In South Dakota, residents with a concealed-carry permit may now carry a pistol while riding a snowmobile; Kentucky has not only removed its six-month-residency requirement for a concealed-carry permit but also instructed state police that they have 30 — not 90 — days to approve applications; Idaho has banned local jurisdictions from refusing to recognize concealed-carry rights; Utah has made it illegal for the state and for local jurisdictions to compel concealed-carry holders to disclose that they are carrying; and Mississippi has clarified the meaning of “concealed,” so that one cannot be prosecuted if a concealed gun becomes temporarily and accidentally visible.”
Thank you, President Obama, for doing more for gun rights and the proliferation of firearms in our society than perhaps any other individual in our nation’s history. As the article claims, you may be the “Best Inadvertent Gun Salesman in History”. For that I am truly grateful. I just wish it didn’t have to be so painful or under direct threat of losing our constitutionally provided 2nd Amendment rights.

And here’s the other side of the coin. This article predicts the demise of candidates of both major parties who voted against gun control bills. The first article contains some strong statements from gun control advocates and groups that are nothing less than political threats and this poll data is fuel to their fire.

Results of the next election will certainly be interesting to watch and analyze. Let’s hope the issue doesn’t have to remain so strongly in the media and in the halls of Congress and state assemblies until then. It’s exhausting.
