Vice President Joe Biden Seeks Help from Retired Military
February 28, 2013
Military friends, what say you to the idea of us standing with our Vice President, "Uncle" Joe Biden and the White House's gun control campaign?
For my non-military friends, you may have noticed a loud silence from our standing military regarding the gun control debate. That's because military members are prohibited from getting involved in politics in any way that implies military support. They cannot speak out as an active service member, wear their uniforms at rallies, etc. Most of the ones you have heard from are either retired or former service members. Service members still have their rights to free speech, etc., but they must exercise them as private citizens and not associate their profession and their cause. On occasion you will see an active service member speaking out, but they're doing so in violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), the military's laws.
I'd love to see the results of a poll of active service members on the gun control issues. I think Biden's call to the 'military' would implode very loudly and embarrassingly. (I'd also like to see those results broken down in a variety of ways - by service, occupational specialty, age, combat experience, injured, etc.) We've already seen that, despite their statements, they do NOT have "all police" on their side of the issue.
