"Assault Weapons" Ban NOT to Be Included in "Comprehensive Gun Control Bill"

March 19, 2013

‎"Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says an assault weapons ban will not be part of a comprehensive gun control bill, though the ban's sponsor Sen. Dianne Feinstein could still offer it as an amendment."

"Fox News @FoxNews
#Breaking: Senate Democrats drop assault weapons ban from proposed gun control bill @foxnewspolitics"

Fox News just announced this through email and Twitter. Another small victory for law abiding firearms owners. This does not mean the fight is over. This possibility was recognized weeks ago and Senator Dianne Feinstein seemed happy to say that in this event she’d be able to add it as an amendment, which is also mentioned here. Knowing her rabid demeanor on this topic, I wouldn’t be surprised if she does. Maybe that will be the ‘straw that broke the camel’s back’ though, causing the whole “comprehensive” bill to fail. One can only hope. The fight continues, federally and at the state level.

I have not seen any articles yet, just these breaking news announcements.

A couple articles on the subject.

This is a little confusing. It's from a Washington Post blog, so don't think we can count this as news.

"Senate Democrats’ decision to introduce a gun control bill that doesn’t include an assault weapons ban does not constitute a setback for President Obama’s gun control efforts." Really? Seems like a setback to me - and a major one, unless the so-called "assault weapons" ban was just a ruse to keep us focused in one direction while their real intent lay in another direction. Arguably, that could be on the so-called "universal background checks" or an intent to implement these stringent gun control laws that focus on the objects at the state level, which they've made progress in doing.

"McDonough said the bill can still be brought up as an amendment and that there should still be a concerted effort to pass it." So Senator Harry Reid believes they only have 40 votes, the stripping of this bill from the more comprehensive bill is not a setback, and it can still be added as an amendment and they'll push for votes for it. Does it get any more confusing than this?

Here's a longer and better opinion article that appeared in the Washington Times.

"Mrs. Feinstein insists she will not be ignored. The California Democrat plans to bring two amendments up during the gun votes — to ban firearms that have one cosmetic feature that makes them resembles military weapon and magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. Mr. Reid said Tuesday that “her amendment, using the most optimistic numbers, has less than 40 votes — that’s not 60.” "

A part of me hopes these amendments will be added and that the end result then is that the whole package, the whole "comprehensive bill" fails because of them. This would be sweet irony if Senator Dianne Feinstein, through her rabid dog-like tactics, was directly responsible for the whole package failing. This whole package of proposed legislation is nothing but emotionally driven, feel good, knee jerk reaction in line with a decades old agenda by Feinstein and others.

We can only hope the title of this article is true, that gun control supporters are moving on.

There's more 'it's dead / it's not dead' discussion in this 2-page article and the embedded video story.

I found the final paragraph of the article interesting. Note that this is CBS quoting a blogger, not a CBS journalist's opinion.

" "This is also a timely reminder about how lacking in influence is the president, no matter how the media slobbers over his speeches," wrote the Washington Post's conservative blogger Jennifer Rubin. "This is not a president who is good at persuading the opposition, or even his own side."
