" 'Assault Weapons' ban is just the beginning" "We're on a roll now"

March 11, 2013

Buckle up, folks, we're in for a long campaign against our 2nd Amendment rights. This comes straight from Representative Jan Schakowsky of Illinois.

[About universal background checks:] “The Brady Campaign thinks that of all the things that have been suggested, this may actually be the thing that does the most to prevent gun violence.”

[Of all the current proposals I've read, this is arguably true though not conclusively so.]

"We want everything on the table. This is a moment of opportunity. There's no question about it.” She acknowledges they won't win a so-called "assualt weapons ban" but "We're on a roll now... “we're gonna push as hard as we can and as far as we can.” So, the assault weapons ban is just a beginning? "Oh, absolutely." "I'm against handguns."

[Push for "common sense" and "reasonable" or "push as hard as we can as far as we can"? Straight from a Democratic gun control advocate's lips.]

Mattera [interviewer], again, pushed handguns as a point of conversation, noting that a full-throttle ban could never be secured, considering the Second Amendment’s current wording. “I don’t know. I don’t know that we can’t,” Schakowsky said, going on to note that some municipalities in her district have banned handguns, seemingly driving home the point that there is support among select cohorts for more restrictive measures in this arena. ”I don’t think it’s precluded."

[Note the past tense of her comment. I'm pretty sure that I've read municipalities are NOT allowed to enact this kind of local gun control laws as determined by the Supreme Court. (Perhaps she's heard of it. Perhaps she doesn't care about the USSC since she obviously doesn't care for the Bill of Rights.) This is why Chicago, Washington DC and San Francisco have had to repeal their unconstitutional laws. I know some of my friends are in favor of municipal control but I don't think they've embraced how that impacts people who are law abiding one moment and criminals the next as they literally cross the street. The USSC has also said that firearms that are in common usage, e.g. semi-automatic handguns, cannot be banned. These gun control Dems are living in a fantasy land and relentlessly pursuing their unconstitutional agenda at enormous expense to law abiding citizens and all taxpayers.]

The article includes are 2:32 video showing the interview. In all honesty, at the moment she says she's against handguns, I can't tell if she says "I'm not against handguns." or if she says "I'm against handguns." with a particular vocal inflection. But considering the context of the rest of the conversation, I'm inclined to take the "against" view and take the article's author at face value.
