January 2013 Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing "What Should America Do About Gun Violence"

March 4, 2013

Here’s the link to the ~4-hours Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on “What Should America Do About Gun Violence?” that took place in January 30, 2013. I’ve shared it before in the context of a past post or two. I’ve seen outtakes of it several times but finally worked my way through the whole thing. That took me a few days but I finally buckled in and finished it today.

Sharing in case any of you are motivated to commit the time to watching it. Unfortunately, this Senate.gov website doesn’t provide the ease of use of YouTube for forwarding / searching with visual cues and providing links to particular excerpts.

Note how many of the committee members leave the hearing after they’ve had their chance to speak. They probably have staffers in the room, but most of the primary members, including Senator Dianne Feinstein, don’t stay for the whole hearing.

Witnesses were:
USN Capt Mark Kelly (Ret), husband of former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords who made a brief introductory statement, representing Americans for Responsible Solutions;
Prof David Kopel, Adjunct Professor of Advanced Constitutional Law, Research Director for Independence Institute, and Associate Policy Analyst for the Cato Institute;
Chief James Johnson of the Baltimore County Police Department and Chair of the National Law Enforcement Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence;
Gayle Trotter, Attorney and Senior Fellow, Independent Women’s Forum;
Wayne LaPierre, Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Rifle Association.
