March 13, 2013

More movement in the right direction for protecting children in schools.

A law maker who gets it: "Our children are grossly unprotected from an active violent threat," said Rep. Mark McCullough, R-Sapulpa, who introduced the bill in part as a response to the deadly school shooting in Newtown, Conn. "We don't need to be willfully ignorant of the fact that this could happen."

Law makers who don't: "This sounds like bargain basement security for kids," said Rep. Corey Williams, D-Stillwater. "It doesn't sound like we're doing much more than sexy lip service."
"This bill is the cheap way out," said McDaniel, D-Smithville. "We just give teachers another job to do."

Sarcasm: Hmmm. Effective and inexpensive. Yep, that sounds like reason to oppose it. "Another job to do"? Isn't that what's been going on in the corporate world for the past decade or more - (downsizing and) added responsibilities for employees (remaining behind)? Oh, btw, it's VOLUNTARY!

Anger: How DARE he say this is "sexy lip service" after all the complete nonsense, feel-good legislation being opportunistically and aggressively pushed by Democrats nation wide that even they admit will have no immediate impact on reducing violent crime or preventing other mass murders in our schools. How many MILLIONS of our dollars have our law makers wasted in their overzealous pursuits to "infringe" upon the 2nd Amendment rights of law abiding gun owners while doing little or nothing to actually affect the causes of the problem?

From my previous reading, I was aware that there is a firearms training company who has publicly offered free training for school districts, offered to teachers, administrators or staff, as long as they meet 3 (?) simple administrative prerequisites. When I went looking for a reference to include here, I was surprised to discover that free gun training is already being provided to hundreds of teachers in at least 5 states. Instead of posting the one specific offer I was aware of, I'm posting the Google search instead. Good for those educators for accepting the responsibility for protecting our children and for doing it in a responsible way.
